So it goes

Seeing as I can't sleep in this morning, you lucky people get an update.

This weekend was my first spent in Stafford since moving here. I met some new people, drank coffee, ate Chinese, saw a bloody great fire burn down very fast, fireworks, went on a terrifying fair ground ride and met new people. Most of all of this went very well, some not so well. I'm now sitting here feeling listless and a tad pointless. Perhaps it's a touch of winter blues, but this optimism lark is difficult to sustain. How do you naturally cheerful types manage it? Drugs?

Anyway, at least I got some shooting in. I went to an archery shop near Whitchurch that has a hunting simulator bought from the US. It's an 18 metre range at the end of which is a canvas screen, onto which is projected one of several thousand hunting "scenarios" (a couple of turkeys walking around, a bear scratching a tree, etc.) You have a few seconds to wait for a suitable shot and to take it, using arrows with specially fitted blunt points. The range is flooded with infrared, which for some complicated technical reason enables the computer to pick up exactly where the shot lands and whether it's in the kill zone (usually the heart/lung area).

Anyway, standard range time is an hour for £20 (between two). I shot against a friend from one of the internet forums I'm a member of. I even won, which I think was more a matter of luck than judgement. Still, I'm glad a giraffe didn't appear on the screen (yes, apparently US bowhunters like to dream of shooting African animals) as I'm really not sure whether I could have taken the shot. What a wimp :-)
