Joan Baez Gig - the long version

Drove into Wolverhampton for the first time ever - that was exciting - for the concert. Parked in the multistorey across the road from the Civic Hall, picked up my ticket and sauntered in.
The atmosphere even before the gig started was fantastic. People of all ages were bimbling around, politely queuing to buy CDs from the merchandise man and generally eagerly anticipating the concert.
Right on time, she walked out onto the stage with her three backing musicians to thunderous applause and launched straight into "Farewell Angelina". She's 66 years old, has been singing professionally for 49 years, and while her voice may have changed with age it's still utterly stunning.
She bantered with the audience (asked us to marry her at one point), chatted about politics, obsessed about the tuning on her guitar and was utterly, utterly brilliant. She finished, naturally, with Diamonds and Rust.
Afterwards a small collection of people waited outside the stage door for an hour, including myself. She came out, looking much smaller than she did on the stage, but her deep brown eyes are even more amazing up close. There was no pushing or jostling to meet her, she had her own pen for all the signings and she seemed genuinely delighted to meet everyone. She signed my CD, chatted with me briefly and shook my hand. I walked away genuinely star struck, and made it back to my car only minutes before the car park closed.
And there we go. Squeeeeee!
