Home again, home again
Jan. 5th, 2005 10:53 pmChristmas was hectic, the New Year slightly less so.
The low points:
Travelling by air. I'm never entirely comfortable with flying, and I have now developed an intense loathing for Newark airport. A quick hint - if you ever rely on making a connection there, 2 hours is not enough. Also, all planes flying out of Birmingham to the US appear to be smaller than 747s and without the fuel capacity. Therefore, if the jet stream is strong (100mph headwind in our case) you will have to land in Gander in Canada. Gander is Inuit for "Middle of Nowhere".
The cold.
badgersandjam may claim that it wasn't that cold, but frankly it was about 10 degrees C colder than I've ever been when we were in MA. I don't mind the cold much over here, but they have a different kind of cold over there. When your breath starts freezing your nostrils together, you should seriously think about moving to a warmer climate.
Jet lag. Not nice. My sleep patterns are stabilising, however.
Discovering on my latest credit card statement that the Internet company I tried to order my camera from in early December managed to forget that I had cancelled my order (because it would take a month to supply me with the goods) and have charged me for it anyway. I have instructed my credit card company to recover the payment and I'm going to have great fun talking to the sales department tomorrow.
Landlord still hasn't sorted out the f**king fridge situation. If it's not sorted soon, I might be forced to have sterner words with the letting agent.
The high points:
Good to see people I haven't seen in a while. This includes family and friends. On New Year's Eve, I shrugged off the cries of my confused body clock and went to a small party at a friends' house in Malvern, where I saw some even older friends from my Aberystwyth days.
My shiny new bow handle is a joy to behold. I'm taking it to the archery shop tomorrow to get an arrow rest and to do a little more setting up.
My new camera is working fantastically well. It makes it digustingly easy to take pictures, and the zoom range really is so useful it's hard to believe. I may put a few piccies online for people to view some time.
I have a stack of new clothes, some shoes, some boots and a selection of other things, courtesy of Father Christmas and the excellent GBP to USD exchange rate (for us, anyway). One of the pressies includes a pound of Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee beans. Yummy.
Anyway, that's about it for the moment. Time for bed, said Zebeddee.
