Music and ponderings
Jul. 6th, 2006 08:44 amMy brother Thomas came up yesterday, and we drove up to the NEC to see Billy Joel in concert. I was originally going with Mum, but she's seen him twice already and was rather disappointed both times. So when Thomas expressed an interest in going, she gave her ticket to him.
Her mistake.
He was amazing. He started with Angry Young Man, and proceeded to rip through all the hits you'd expect to hear - Still Rock n' Roll, My Life, Always A Woman, Allentown, Uptown Girl, We Didn't Start The Fire, Innocent Man, Highway to Hell, . . .
. . . well, he didn't actually sing the latter. A roadie called "Chainsaw" came out on stage and belted it out, while Billy Joel bounced around with a guitar. You don't expect an AC/DC cover at a Billy Joel concert, but bloody hell it was good.
Joel is an amazing entertainer. As well as his phenomenal skill on the piano, he kept the audience entertained with jokes, tricks with a mic stand, a quick rendition of Rule Brittania and self-deprecating humour. At the end of the encore, he had the audience alternately booing and cheering as he edged away from and towards his piano. But the inevitable end came with a stunning rendition of Piano Man, for which he let the audience sing the chorus.
2 hour and 20 minutes of the entertainer (and yes, he played that track too). Superb.
In other news:
Bad - I was expecting this by now, but I haven't got the job at GCHQ. This annoys me, as I'm certain is was a perfect match. I think my nerves lost me that one.
Just plain odd - My brother Paul called to tell me he's accepted a job offer in Melbourne, Australia. He's planning on working out there for a couple of years rather than emigrating permanently, but still. This is very, very weird, and has made me start thinking about all the things I've never done because I was too scared or lacked the confidence. I'm getting the confidence together now, but is it too late? Hum.
